چکیده

Introduction: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor disorder characterized by uncontrollable urges to move the legs, causing chronic sleep disturbances. Brain iron deficiency has been considered as an important contributing factor to RLS [1-2]. In this study, we applied voxel-based relaxometry (VBR) for in vivo iron measurement and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) for morphological study respectively to a same study cohort, aiming to determine the impact of iron deficiency on brain morphology. Our results revealed a striking association of local T2 change with brain atrophy.

Reduction of R2 in the Basal Ganglia of Restless Legs Syndrome: a Biomarker for Iron Deficiency

Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder with a prevalence of about 5-10% of the general population. Its clinical symptom is characterized by uncontrollable, unbearable urges to move the legs, causing chronic sleep deprivation. The iron deficiency has been considered an important contributing factor for RLS [1]. In vivo iron evaluation for RLS has largely utilized T...

Multimodality Study for Restless Legs Syndrome: Morphological Changes in White and Gray matter

Introduction: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a sensory-motor disorder causing chronic sleep disturbances. Currently, neuroradiological investigations such as functional MRI, voxel-based relaxometry (VBR) as well as nuclear medicine have revealed a widespread pattern of pathological changes involving cerebra, cerebella and brain stem [1-3]. Thus, underlying mechanism of RLS is not well-understoo...

Increased NAA Concentration in the Restless Legs Syndrome: Possible Link to Hypomyelination

Introduction: Iron deficiency has been known as a contributing factor for restless legs syndrome (RLS). Iron plays a pivotal role in brain physiology as an essential component for proper myelination, as a cofactor for enzymes in neurotransmitter synthesis, lipid and DNA synthesis. Most in vivo studies on RLS have been carried out with fMRI and MR relaxation mapping [1-3]. To date, the associate...

Sleep disorders: A review of the interface between restless legs syndrome and iron metabolism

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by unpleasant sensations mainly in the legs. 43% of RLS-associated conditions have also been associated with systemic iron deficiency. The objective of this study was to review in the literature the relationship between iron metabolism and RLS. With an initial search using the keywords combination "Iron Metabolism OR Iron Deficiency AND Restless Leg...
